Dear subscriber ...

Milly Sleeping has a new offer for mailing list members ...

... Let us imagine that's you -

It begins with your first purchase of a new garment or accessory from Autumn/Winter 2010 collections. For simply announcing yourself as a subscriber, a 10% discount will be applied to the item of your choice. You may also accept a little card from us, which will entitle you to further discounts throughout the season.

By presenting this card during subsequent visits, you’ll be eligible to take 15% off the price of your second purchase, and 20% off the price of your third (fourth or fifth purchases, depending on just how cold you get this Winter).

Now in store – take 10%… 15%… 20% off – new pieces by Lui Hon, Romance Was Born, Strange & Strange, St. Clements (NEW!), Primoeza (NEW!) and High Tea with Mrs Woo. The offer will also apply to incoming collections by Limedrop, Kuwaii, Lonely Hearts, Alexi Freeman, Georgina Thomas and Kyoko – with more labels to be announced over time.

The fine print: this offer only applies to full-price items, to the value of $50 or more, from A/W10. The offer begins now and will run its course during the season. The offer is available to mailing list subscribers, Facebook fans and Twitter followers (which you can become at any time). The offer may be applied to short-term layby purchases (which means four weeks credit, instead of the usual six). Multiple items do not have to be bought at once to attract the discounts but if you do choose two or more pieces together, the discount will be averaged - for example, your first two items purchased simultaneously will both be discounted by 12.5%. Finally, if you're eligible to take us up on this offer, please do let us know who you are – we’d like to thank you personally for your interest.

Craft Hatch this Saturday

This Saturday, Milly Sleeping will partake in Craft Hatch, coordinated by wonderful Kim Brockett of wonderful Craft Victoria.

Ordinarily Craft Hatch runs twice monthly as a market and showcase for up-and-coming makers and designers, at the City Library on Flinders Lane (between Swanston & Elizabeth). This fortnight’s event is a special edition for the LMFF Cultural Program; Kim has invited a great range of emerging and more established fashion-focused designers.

We’ll be there with a kind of miniature, mobile version of the store, carrying a selection of pieces by Hua, Lui Hon, High Tea with Mrs Woo, Primoeza and whatever else we can fit, as well as cards and bags and curios created in-house. Enter the City Library and head up the stairs, between 11 and 4pm.

There are many other intriguing, Craft Vic-related things to do on the day, including cantering up the hill for 1.30pm, to see a special Floor Talk, given by two of our favourites – MATERIALBYPRODUCT and Limedrop. Limedrop have also created Craft Vic’s enCounter window display for the month of March. Inside the galleries, there are multiple new exhibitions to see (opening tonight) and then, across and down the way, there’s the Insert Coin Here exhibition to chase up at Captains of Industry (that is, if there are still any pieces left).

(Apologies if you now have twenty-seven browser windows tiling your desktop. Melbourne's just a busy, little town...)

NEW! Primoeza

We’ve been looking forward to introducing a new knit label, and can do so today without any hint of apology - it’s truly cool outside, and a very good time to start thinking about a warm but lightweight scarf to treat you nice in the coming months.

Hello Primoeza.

Hello fine, soft, simple, sophisticated neckwear – designed and made in Melbourne by Elizabeth Rayman Yong on a hand-operated knitting machine.

Milly Sleeping has three styles and several beautiful colour ways to choose between (or collect!) - the large ‘square snap’ folds about the neck twice and fastens in the corners, the smaller ‘forest’ scarf has a fine lurex thread and hugs the neck with an easy-to-tie knot, and the unisex ‘keeper’ scarf keeps we presume – keeps you warm, keeps you smart, keeps you happy.

Pictured: Primoeza square snap scarves, in brown and light grey (RRP $169);
Primoeza forest scarf (RRP $125);
Primoeza keeper scarf with leather detail (RRP $89);
NEW! Strange & Strange merino tuliip dress worn throughout (RRP $189)

K. I. S. S. by Lui Hon

One of the most 'how did they do that?' collections of A/W10 is now available at Milly Sleeping.

All but one of our selection of Lui Hon garments can be worn two ways, or even more.

The adaptions range from subtle twists to total transformations - a little loop that lifts a hem, a basic tie to adjust the neckline, or a handy bag that becomes a dress.

The mutability is intriguing and downright useful; it can also be intimidating, even to shopgirls. Lui relates the workings of his pieces to the art of the origami. Like origami, partaking in the folding and turning is the best way to understand and appreciate the outcome, and we are happy to go through the process with you... There's only one piece that can really be classified as tricky and, as it turns out, it's also the garment that gives the most insight into how things work in general, offering little hints that you might apply to existing pieces in your wardrobe.

P. S. There are two ways, too, to cheer Lui on during the upcoming L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival:

... By attending the Independent Runway show on March 20 (also see Kuwaii and Alexi Freeman), OR, by sending all kinds of positive thoughts and lucky tidings via autumnual breezes, as he contends this year's prestigious Woolmark Designer Award.
